What are the referral criteria for patients?

A housebound (especially bedridden) patient who cannot get out to attend a dental surgery and who would also meet the Special Care referral criteria for the CDS – i.e. care could not be provided by a GDP who undertook a domiciliary visit because the patient required the specialised clinical skills of CDS staff.
An assessment visit is offered. Active treatment usually provided in the clinic, ambulance transport arranged.

Routine exodontia under GA for children – Referrals for simple extractions under GA in children will be accepted if they comply with the following criteria:
• Children between the ages of 2 years and 16 years
• Weight between 5th and 95th centile
• ASA 1 and 2 Simple exodontias only
• Parents / Carers have to be able to conform to pre and post operative instructions.

Referrals are for children experiencing toothache for whom:
• Local anaesthesia (with or without, as appropriate, inhalation sedation) has been offered but proved inadequate or unsuccessful.
• Local anaesthesia is contra-indicated (e.g. in the presence of sepsis despite drainage)
• Multiple extractions in young or very nervous children who are experiencing pain from more than one quadrant.
• Where there is an established allergy to local anaesthesia.

Comprehensive care under GA for Special Care patients.
• Age – all ages
• Disability – the patient has a physical disability, a significant learning disability, or behavioural problem which precludes care without the use of general anaesthesia.

What are the main reasons for rejecting patients?

Patients requiring routine check ups and simple dentures will not be accepted for domiciliary care.

Patients who can get out of the home to attend for other care such as podiatry, hairdressing appointments or social events will not be accepted for domiciliary care.
